Multiple Group One-winning trainer Robert Cowell has launched a new syndicate in association with Leicester Tigers and England scrum-half Ben Youngs.
The “Tigers Syndicate” has been set up for followers of racing and rugby to combine their interests and meet others who share them.
Youngs has made more than 200 appearances for Premiership side Leicester Tigers and has over 70 caps for England. This will be his first foray into racehorse ownership.
After spending a morning on the gallops at Cowell’s Newmarket yard, Youngs said: “It’s something that I really want to be a part of. I think it is going to be a really enjoyable journey and I’m excited to see where it goes.
“Coming from an environment where I train every day, it is quite amazing to see how the horses are trained too.
“Seeing the facilities and training that goes into making them the athletes they are has been a great insight.”
Cowell has enjoyed top-level success in Europe’s most prestigious races with the likes of Prohibit, Jwala and Goldream – and he confirmed the syndicate horse is likely to be a sprinter too.
“I quite like those strong, strapping individuals, the sort that could show up in a ruck – a bit like a rugby scrum player in a lot of ways,” said the trainer.
The syndicate horse – not yet purchased – will race around the midlands area, so the players and syndicate members will not have to travel far to see it run.
