Stand Guard fails in record bid at Southwell

Stand Guard failed in his bid to land a record 28th victory on the all-weather when only fourth at Southwell.

John Butler's 12-year-old, who is a veteran of 82 races, could never get into a challenging position after just missing a beat at the start of division two of the Betway Handicap at Southwell.

Sent off the 5-2 favourite, he was rousted along by Liam Keniry to take closer order but was never really competitive as Moojaned (3-1) landed the spoils for trainer David Evans and jockey Andrew Mullen.

Stand Guard currently shares the record of 27 all-weather wins with La Estrella thanks to his victory at Kempton nine days ago.
