Roger Fell keeps faith in Declan McDonogh for Burnt Sugar Ascot ride

Tue 3 Oct 2017

Declan McDonogh will maintain his partnership with Burnt Sugar in the totescoop6 Challenge Cup at Ascot on Saturday.

Trainer Roger Fell employed McDonogh on Irish Champions Weekend and the pair were successful in the Sovereign Path Handicap at Leopardstown.

Burnt Sugar won what was an ultra-competitive race by a clear two lengths, which came on the back of another smart performance at Goodwood, when second to Johnny Barnes.

"He's going to go down to Ascot and Declan will ride him again," said Fell.

"I still think his handicap mark is fair as he's in such good form.

"We've also got him in the Balmoral on Champions Day and if he can win one of those, we'll be all right.

"I used to own Smarty Socks and he won the big seven-furlong race at Ascot in September and was then second in this one.

"I'd settle for that again!"
