Raymond Tusk team turn to Jamie Spencer for Leger ride

Jamie Spencer is in the frame to partner Raymond Tusk in the William Hill St Leger at Doncaster.

Connections of the Richard Hannon-trained colt have approached the two-time champion jockey for the ride in the world’s oldest Classic on September 15, which he won for Aidan O’Brien on Brian Boru in 2003.

“He’s on track for the Leger. All roads lead to that and we’ve got Jamie Spencer to ride him, all being well,” said Tim Palin of owners Middleham Park Racing.

“He’s in good shape. We’re just waiting for the Leger now.”

Winner of the Listed Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton in July, Raymond Tusk looked the right type for the St Leger when finishing second to Hamada in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury.

“There were one or two other options available to us,” said Palin.

“We are still in the Arc, but I think the Geoffrey Freer told us he’s not up to winning an Arc, whereas in the Leger stepping up again in trip we think the extra furlong and a half will bring out that extra improvement in him.

“We bumped into a really nice horse at Newbury who is off to the Melbourne Cup.”
