Patrick Cowley handed 12-day ban by Uttoxeter stewards

Sun 24 Sep 2017

Conditional jockey Patrick Cowley was hit with a 12-day ban for not taking all "reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing" in a race at Uttoxeter.

Cowley, who claims 7lb, was riding Balibour (50-1) for Emma Lavelle in the Sentinel May Un Mar Lady Novices' Hurdle.

The five-year-old finished sixth in a field of 12 but the stewards were not happy with Cowley's ride.

In the inquiry, Cowley stated his instructions were to attempt to get his mount to relax as he had been finishing his races weakly.

Cowley went on to say Balibour ran free early on and, as a result, was stepping at his hurdles, becoming more detached.

While Balibour did make late headway, Cowley put this down to passing tired horses and that he was just staying on at the same pace.

Lavelle confirmed the instructions and expressed herself happy with the ride but the stewards took action.
