Oisin Murphy told Racing UK on Sunday that his reaction to winning the Grosvenor Sport Celebration Mile aboard Lightning Spear the previous day was a source of embarrassment.
The jockey, who had ridden a four-timer at Newmarket the previous night, celebrated wildly after he had guided the five-year-old to back-to-back victories in the Group Two contest by a whisker from Zonderman.
His jubilant reaction to being called the winner after the photo-finish attracted plenty of attention social media, with the vast majority of comments being complimentary.
“How embarrassing - I didn’t expect it to be caught on camera. Sorry for the overreaction” Murphy told presenter Rachel Casey after enjoying another success at Goodwood. “It’s kind of rare, thank God, that I do things like that.”
When Casey suggested he had nothing to be sorry about, he said: “It probably provided good entertainment and made people laugh.
“It does mean a lot. Lightning Spear has run to a very high level in defeat and he’s a really high class horse, so it’s important he’s winning these sort of races. Hopefully he can step forward from this in a higher grade.”
Murphy was out of luck in the same Qatar Racing silks in the big race of the day on Sunday aboard Bless Him in the Group Three Supreme Stakes.
The Britannia winner was a bit slow away and never threatened to get into contention behind Dutch Connection.
