Muffri'ha makes most of Lingfield opportunity under James Doyle

Thu 2 Nov 2017

Muffri'ha booked her place at the All-Weather Championships on Good Friday as she won the 32Red EBF Stallions Fleur De Lys Fillies' Stakes for the second year running at Lingfield.

The five-year-old mare was not the most cooperative on the way down the start, but she had plenty of pace to overcome a wide draw as James Doyle got her into a prominent position in this fast-track qualifier over a mile.

Market rival Promising Run just held the lead in the early stages but Muffri'ha went on when Doyle pressed the button a furlong and a half from home.

The 11-8 favourite, trained by William Haggas, soon settled the issue and was able to resist the late challenge of Zest by a length. Promising Run was a half a length away in third.

Maureen Haggas, wife and assistant to the trainer, said: "She is getting naughtier and naughtier before the race.

"She was not great in Dubai in the winter, but we got round her and she ran well in Dubai. She had a break over the summer and was very naughty first time, she stopped and looked at the screen on the way down, then over shot the start so we ponied her the last twice there.

"We thought she would be OK today as she has been here twice, but she went as far away as she could and stood there and waited for us.

"She is like that every day and she is what you call a character. We've got the hang of her at home. There is not much more for her and she has been placed in Group One and Twos and won her Group Three and umpteen Listed races.

"The most important thing is that she gets in foal next spring. She will be missed on the racetrack as she has been fantastic. She has just improved and improved and she is pretty solid now.

"As long as you get her to the start you know she will give 100 per cent."

Doyle was completing a double after scoring on newcomer Statehood (5-1) for Charlie Appleby in the 32Redsport,com/British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes.

Gulliver (9-4 favourite), trained by Hugo Palmer,  gave Doyle a quickfire hat-trick when seeing off Sacred Act by a neck in the Play Jackpot Games At sunbets.co.uk/vegas Handicap.
