Mohawk led home a one-two-three for Aidan O’Brien in the Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket.

The Ballydoyle handler had saddled five previous winners of the Group Two contest and possessed a strong hand as he went in search of a sixth.

The outsider of the trio, Sydney Opera House, cut out much of the running alongside Mark Johnston’s Victory Command and still held a narrow advantage racing inside the final two furlongs.

However, Mohawk soon took over in the hands of the trainer’s son Donnacha and powered clear for a decisive one-and-a-quarter-length success.

Sydney Opera House was a clear second ahead of another stablemate, Cape Of Good Hope, in third.

The previously unbeaten Beatboxer was the 7-4 favourite for John Gosden and Frankie Dettori, but he was in trouble from an early stage and trailed home last of the seven runners.

“He's a lovely horse, he's been coming along lovely and he loved going a mile," O'Brien said.

"He'll be a lovely middle distance for next year.

“He's progressing really well and we'll probably put him away now for the classic trials in the spring.

“The Breeders' Cup Juvenile would be a possibility but I think I would probably like to leave him now and wait for the spring. I would imagine that he's done enough.

“He'll be very happy starting at a mile before progressing from there.“

It was Mohawk's first attempt at the mile trip and as he is by dual Derby winner Galileo it suggests he will improve further as he goes up to middle distances as a three-year-old. The winner was given a 33-1 quote for the Investec Derby by Betfair behind hot favourite Too Darn Hot.

Winning jockey Donnacha O’Brien added: “He was pretty straightforward and he’s a lovely, uncomplicated horse. It’s a lovely race to win and he should go on from that. He will be a nice horse for next year.

“I’ve had a good year and been lucky enough to ride some wonderful horses and in some big races. I’m very grateful and thankful.”
