Martyn Meade sets his sights on Dewhurst with Advertise

Martyn Meade is excited to see how Advertise will handle the step up to seven furlongs in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket after ruling him out of the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes

Having claimed Group One honours over six furlongs in the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh on his latest start, the Showcasing colt will swerve a return to the County Kildare track on September 16 in favour of an outing on the Rowley Mile the following month.

The Manton handler said: “We were very much thrilled with what he did in Ireland and he has come out of it very well.

“He is a very good horse and knowing what his form was, he had to have a good chance in Ireland and it was just the race for him.

“It was the right sort of timing and the stiff six furlongs was important. It was better than going to France for the Prix Morny and I think it was the right decision to make.

“It is now time to just give him a bit of a break as he has had a fair old campaign, he has been on the go since Newbury in May.

“We will put him away and come back for the Dewhurst. We won’t go to Ireland next month as I think the Dewhurst is the natural progression for him. We want to step him up to seven furlongs, so that is the plan.

“Anything else in between will be too quick in time for him, so that comes at the right time. If there is a bit of cut in the ground, I don’t think that will inconvenience him at all. If we could win that it would be fantastic.

“It will just be interesting to see how he gets that bit extra distance, whether he will be able to step up to a mile next year, which would be the icing on the cake.”
