Hughie Morrison embarks upon Melbourne Cup adventure with Marmelo

Wed 13 Sep 2017

Marmelo has begun preparations for a crack at the Emirates Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 7.

Hughie Morrison's dual Group-winning stayer went into quarantine on Wednesday and will head to Australia later this month to be prepared for the big race.

Marmelo is towards the head of the weights with 55kg (8st 9lb) for the prestigious handicap over two miles.

"He's going into quarantine and will fly out at the end of the month," said Morrison.

"The handicapper's been pretty tough on him. The form probably reflects his rating and on we go.

"Hopefully he can run well over there and come back for the Cup races here next year.

"We've been quite careful not to over-race him this year as we've had this race at the back of our minds."

Marmelo, a top-priced 33-1 for the race, won the Group Two Prix Kergorlay at Deauville last month on his latest start.
