The Score column has tipped double-figure priced winners for the past fortnight and Andy Stephens has a 20-1 tip in the Betfred Ebor at York on Saturday.
Flymetothestars looks the right favourite for the Betfred Ebor (3.35) at York on Saturday because he did plenty wrong when a fine third in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle last time and, lightly raced, remains open to plenty of improvement.
The niggle with backing him at a best price 6-1, however, is that the four-year-old son of Sea The Stars has only run on the all-weather. It could be that he is equally at home on turf - perhaps even better - but it is enough to put me off.
A bigger-priced alternative is Clever Cookie, who is chalked up at a general 20-1 to strike for Peter Niven and Graham Lee.
Plenty will put a line through him because he is a nine-year-old who has been there, done that and got the T-shirt but he has always had a touch of class, loves the track and should get the bit of give in the ground that brings out the best in him.
He was unlucky when sixth in the Ebor three years ago and his victory in the Group Two Yorkshire Cup last season was the fourth time he had won on the Knavesmire.
Clever Cookie’s reappearance run in this year’s Yorkshire Cup - when beaten a couple of lengths behind Dartmouth - indicates he retains plenty of ability and you can make excuses for his subsequent three defeats, including when not beaten far behind Flymetothestars in the Northumberland Plate on his penultimate start.
Clever Cookie has chalked up four previous wins at York
Badly drawn at Newcastle, Clever Cookie had only one behind him turning for home but rattled home and would have finished on the heels of the leaders with a clearer passage. He is 2lb lower on Saturday and Lee, not on board on that occasion, has guided him to four of his six wins on the Flat.
A year from now it would be no surprise if Intellect were an Ebor candidate and he looks the one to be on in the Betfred Melrose Stakes (2.25).
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt, a general 7-1, won on his turf debut at Nottingham and was a runaway nine-length winner on his handicap debut over 1m4f at Newbury last month.
His winning distance that day was accentuated by the heavy going but the Nathaniel colt galloped on relentlessly and, while he has to cope with an 11lb rise and better ground, he should relish stepping up to almost 1m6f.
The Al Basti Equiworld Gimcrack Stakes (3.00) usually yields a good horse - Muharrar and Blue Point have won recent renewals - and I’m pretty certain Invincible Army, another 7-1 chance, fits that mould.
He probably did a bit too much too soon when a solid fourth to Cardsharp (3lb worse off) in the July Stakes at Newmarket last month and he also ran better than the bare form indicates when chasing home Havana Grey, who has subsequently run a blinder in the Prix Morny, when dropped back to five furlongs in the Molecomb at Goodwood last time.
The combination of six furlongs/York’s flat track promise to suit Invincible Army ideally and James Tate could hardly have his horses in better form - with seven of his past 18 runners being successful.
Finally, at Newmarket, Sporting Times looks worth an interest in the 1m6f CJ Murfitt Ltd Handicap (3.50).
The pedigree of Ed Dunlop’s unexposed three-year-old is all about stamina and his latest effort, when third to Quloob in a handicap over 1m4f at Newmarket last time, did not get to the bottom of him.
He should appreciate stepping up to this trip for the first time (he is by Derby winner Sir Percy and his dam a half-sister to smart stayer Times Up) and in receipt of weight from all his rivals a bold bid looks on the cards.
