Hollie Doyle serves up a treat on Captain Marmalade

Jimmy Fox sang Hollie Doyle's praises after the talented apprentice steered Captain Marmalade to victory at Brighton.

The 3lb claimer brought the five-year-old gelding with a well-timed run to take division one of the Love Fairs Antique Fair 22 October Handicap.

After being ridden patiently in the early stages, Captain Marmalade (11-2) stormed clear to score by four and a half lengths from 2-1 favourite Chough.

"It helped having the hood back on and Hollie gave him an exceptionally good ride, a real peach of a ride," said Wiltshire-based Fox.

"He needs a bit of cover and to settle out the back. He's not jumping out of the stalls recently, for whatever reason. He used to jump out too quick, then we tried to get him not to do that and he's been jumping out too slow.

"Today he jumped out well and was on their heels and travelled well for Hollie. She's a top-class jockey. She has that happy knack of getting horses to run for her.

"She'll ride for us as much as she can. We don't have a whole lot, but I'd love to put her on everything if I had my way."

With Approval (100-30) stuck on well for Pat Cosgrave to give weight all round in division two for last year's St Leger-winning trainer Laura Mongan.

Alwaysandforever made light work of solitary opponent Sugardrop to easily land the odds in the Route Mobile Maiden Fillies' Maiden Stakes.

The Luca Cumani-trained three-year-old was sent off the 2-13 favourite in a match, after showing great promise when second to subsequent Ribblesdale Stakes winner Coronet on her only start 363 days previously.

She made all the running for Ryan Moore over 10 furlongs and scored by an effortless 14 lengths.

Philip Hide's Black Caesar (7-2) recorded his fourth course success in the Brighton Lions Firework Night 5 November Handicap to give 7lb apprentice Sebastian Woods a fourth career win.

Diamond Dougal (11-2), trained by Mick Channon, asserted in the final half-furlong to hold off Queen Of Kalahari by three-quarters of a length in the Marathonbet Live Casino Nursery Handicap in the hands of Charlie Bishop.

Henry Candy's The Wear It Well (8-1) upset 1-2 shot Daybreak by making all under Dane O'Neill in the EBF Maiden Fillies' Maiden Stakes.

Oisin Murphy got Lady Morel (13-2) up on the line to take the Ian Carnaby Selling Handicap by a neck from long-time leader Miss Uppity for trainer Joe Tuite.
