Andre Fabre takes aim at Enable in Breeders' Cup Turf

Mon 22 Oct 2018

Andre Fabre is ready to let last year’s winner Talismanic and stablemate Waldgeist take on Enable in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

The Godolphin-owned Talismanic provided the legendary French trainer with his third victory in the race and his fifth Breeders’ Cup success overall when striking gold at Del Mar last November.

Fabre’s two previous Breeders’ Cup Turf heroes – In The Wings (1990) and Shirocco (2005) – claimed their victories after finishing fourth in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, the exact placing Waldgeist achieved at ParisLongchamp earlier this month.

Fabre is looking forward to seeing both horses run at Churchill Downs, but admits John Gosden’s dual Arc heroine Enable is likely to prove very difficult to beat.

Our experts analyse the Arc in which Waldgeist finished fourth to Enable

Fabre told At The Races: “Of course, Enable is the one to beat, but they are both in good shape.

“Talismanic likes those short bends. I think I was probably a bit soft with him in the training, and he didn’t get into the Arc (finished 13th). He seems to be OK now.

“The draw (13) didn’t help Waldgeist, but it’s like that in Longchamp. He could have been third with a better draw.”

Enable will have to defy statistics if she is to justify short priced favouritism, with all seven Arc winners who have run at the Breeders’ Cup in the same season having suffered defeat – a list that includes such illustrious names as as Golden Horn, Dylan Thomas and Dancing Brave.

Fabre will not be relying on past trends, however.

“Usually a good Arc winner doesn’t run at the Breeders’ Cup,” he said.

“I did it once with Trempolino, and he ran a hell of a race, but it’s the first time a filly of the calibre of Enable has run in the Breeders’ Cup.

“It’s not enough to be confident, but it gives us some chance. There are many factors – you have the draw and things like that.”
