Don’t Touch It foils Listen Dear in Listowel thriller

Don’t Touch It just edged out Listen Dear in a thrilling finish to the feature Southampton Goodwill Chase at Listowel on Friday.

The eight-year-old, trained by Jessica Harrington, foiled Listen Dear’s attempt to make a lot of the running by wearing her down on the race to the line to grab the verdict in the dying strides.

Listen Dear kicked on before the field set out on their second circuit, but could not quite shake off the attentions of the JP McManus-owned pair of Carlingford Lough and Don’t Touch It.

The former was in third place when he came down at the second-last fence, leaving the other two to fight it out.

Listen Dear still held the advantage over the last, but Mark Walsh persisted with Don’t Touch It (7-1) to win by a head.

“He got there a bit early in Ballinrobe (when third), but he made amends today and battled well,” said McManus’ racing manager, Frank Berry.

“He jumped well and did it well. He looked like he got the trip well and he seems to be handling the slower ground well.

“It will give him plenty options for the winter and he loves the jumping.”

Berry reported Carlingford Lough to be none the worse for his tumble.

“The old horse is OK and that’s the main thing,” he said.

“He was actually running a blinder.

“He has that bit of class and hopefully we will find something for the winter for him, as he is after dropping down a bit (in the ratings).”
