Conditions key to whether Laugh A Minute takes Ayr Gold Cup chance

Roger Varian will make a late decision over whether Laugh A Minute will take his chance in the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup on Saturday.

The three-year-old, a top-priced 14-1 with bet365, will have to carry almost top-weight on ground which is sure to be testing in Scotland.

“He’s a lovely horse, he just lost his way mid-summer when he didn’t go on firm ground in the Commonwealth Cup,” said Varian on At The Races.

“He’s come back strong, winning at Doncaster and running well at Deauville. We’ve always liked him, but it’s just finding the key to him – hopefully we’re getting there.

“It will be heavy ground at Ayr, no final decision has been made as yet, he does have a few other options, so we’ll see.

“He’s got a lot of weight for a three-year-old, if it was good to soft or soft I’d be up there in a shot, but it could be very heavy ground and that might just make us think twice.”

One Varian inmate who would love it to rain, albeit in France, is Defoe, narrowly denied by Best Solution in Germany last time out.

“We’d like to run him in the Arc and there’s two and a half weeks before it,” said Varian.

“It’s been very dry in France with a dry outlook, but it can change quickly at this time of year and if they got rain he’s capable of running a very big race.

“He’s very good on his day and was a shade unlucky not to win his first Group One in Germany, that form is pretty solid and his early-season form stacks up really well.

“He was really impressive at Newbury on soft early in the season and he hasn’t really had those conditions since.”
