Classic hope Elarqam embarks on winter break following Tattersalls triumph

Elarqam has gone into his winter quarters following his victory in the Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday.

The Mark Johnston-trained colt leapt into the picture for the 2000 Guineas with a likeable performance to land the Group Three over seven furlongs after winning a York maiden on his only previous start just 18 days earlier.

Connections have decided to draw stumps and not be tempted to run Elarqam in either the Dewhurst Stakes or Racing Post Trophy.

"He won't run again this year. He's been put away for the winter. He certainly won't run again before the spring again now," said Angus Gold, racing manager to owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum.

"Hopefully he'll go for the Guineas. Let's see if he's good enough if we get there."

Both Elarqam's parents, Frankel and Attraction, were Guineas winners so it was not surprising he made 1.6 million guineas at Tattersalls Sales last October.

And he is living up to his high regard, earning quotes between 14-1 and 20-1 for the Qipco-sponsored Classic at Newmarket in May.
