Chemical Charge books International mission with last-gasp Kempton success

Chemical Charge snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to set up a trip to Canada after getting up close home in the toteplacepot September Stakes at Kempton.

Having taking advantage of a drop in class in a conditions contest at Musselburgh, the Ralph Beckett-trained five-year-old was sent off the 13-8 favourite to follow it up in the Group Three prize.

Although travelling well throughout the mile-and-and-a-half event, it looked as though the son Sea The Stars was going to have to settle for a place at best after seemingly getting his run blocked approaching the final furlong.

Switched out wide by Oisin Murphy, the market leader thundered home around his rivals before denying Scarlet Dragon by a head. Midterm was a disappointment.

Beckett said: "He got there in the end. The horse got him (Murphy) out of jail, but at the same time he doesn't want to get there too soon, either.

"He will go to Woodbine now for the Canadian International and that was the plan if he won today. You can't always guarantee a strong pace there, but Woodbine will suit him well."
