
Races were first held at Scottsville in 1886 when it was called the City Sporting Club. In 1962 the Gilbey's Stakes was run followed by the Smirnoff Plate a year later. These two races are the oldest existing sponsored races in South Africa.
In 1969 Scottsville staged the first ever International Jockeys meeting attracting riders from all over the globe. In 1998 they became the first South African track to stage three Grade One races on the same card.
