Laytown
Laytown races occupies a unique position in the Irish racing calendar as it is the only race event run on a beach under rules. Since 1876 Laytown has hosted a single annual meeting on its beach. Racing takes place on the Laytown strand on a straight near-level course over six and seven furlong distances.
The course itself is a section of the three-mile long golden strand, and is closed on the morning of the races and take place when the tide goes out. It can be found 46 km north of Dublin and right off the Dublin-Belfast road (N1) at Julianstown. Local folklore has it that it was the parish priest who, in 1876, organised the first races there though it was not until 1901 that a local landowner established the one-day meeting held at the end of the summer
