Suraj on Silver service

Sunday 1 July 2012

Michael Bell

Suraj is likely to have his next start in the John Smith's Silver Cup at York on July 14 after his impressive win at Doncaster on Saturday evening.

Michael Bell's Galileo colt defied top weight over a mile and three-quarters to win by six lengths and is likely to be hit hard by the handicapper on Tuesday. Because of that Bell is stepping him up in class for the Listed event and is even keeping one eye on a possible tilt at the Ladbrokes St Leger, for which he will have an entry.

"He'll possibly run in the Silver Cup at York on the 14th, but we'll obviously see what the handicapper does," said Bell.

"There's also a race the same day at Chester. He's a nice, progressive, staying type.

"The Listed race at York would be a good race to see if we could be thinking about the St Leger, he'll almost certainly have an entry.

"The trouble with the Leger trials is that they are not over a mile and six, they are over a mile and a half and we know he stays further than that, but there's a big gulf between handicaps and Group Ones.

"He's a smart horse, but he's lazy at home so he should get better with racing.

"So few three-year-old's truly stay the Leger trip, especially if the ground was soft which would bring him into the equation."
