Spirit shines in Newbury test

Black Spirit (A Kirby) 4-1
Lay Time (J Fortune) 7-2
Coquet (P Hanagan) 6-1
Black Spirit delighted Clive Cox with his continued return to top form in the Dubai Duty Free Arc Trial at Newbury.
Alan Spence's gelding was a great hope for the stable at one time, but it has never quite panned out as expected and he had only returned with a belated victory at Doncaster last week after a near three-month lay-off.
A blanket could be thrown over three of the four finishers, with the 4-1 shot a head and three-quarters of a length in front of Lay Time and Coquet, with the 10-11 favourite Cameron Highland dropping away after leading.
"I'm thrilled," said Cox. "He ran a great race to be second in Wolferton Handicap at Royal Ascot but he got badly galloped into behind and he spent a month doing very little.
"Last week I was thrilled as we were just getting him back, and he's a very hardy horse so we have options abroad for him as well now."
