Pepper pots St Wilfrid double

Saturday 18 August 2012

Pepper Lane bounced back to form in spectacular fashion to repeat last year's victory in the William Hill Great St Wilfrid Handicap at Ripon.

The five-year-old mare, trained by David O'Meara, had shown little in her previous three starts this season but a return to her favourite track, where she has now won four times, and the application of a first-time hood worked the oracle.

Pepper Lane (20-1) was smartly away on the far side and soon led the field a merry dance under Daniel Tudhope, and though the well-backed Alben Star tried to put in a challenge, it was short lived as Pepper Lane kept on galloping strongly to win by a length and a half from Tax Free.

Louis The Pious was another length and three-quarters away in third and Captain Ramius fourth.

O'Meara said: "This year has been very tricky. She kept missing the break, so we had no idea whether she was in form or not. She was giving her race away at the start. We've done a lot of work with her.

"I don't know if the hood helped or not. They have become quite popular of late and it hasn't done her any harm. A lot of credit has to go to the lads at home. She is very good on her day and she loves it here."
