Marnane targets Stewards’ success
Wednesday 4 July 2012
David Marnane is hoping to plunder another big prize with Jamesie in next month's Blue Square Bet Stewards' Cup at Goodwood.
Big wins in recent seasons for Dandy Boy in the Victoria Cup and Wokingham, and Santo Padre and Nocturnal Affair in the Portland, have advertised Marnane's skills.
Jamesie narrowly lost out in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and may head to Newmarket before Goodwood, with the Bunbury Cup in his sights.
"We might run Jamesie in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket next week, but the Stewards' Cup is certainly on his agenda," said Marnane.
"I have been delighted with him since Ascot. He has come out of the race well and appears to be at the top of his game.
"He is a funny horse as he needs to be played late and, although the winner won well at Royal Ascot, Jamesie beat the group on his side easy enough and he doesn't do a whole lot when he hits the front. I would have liked to see him race on the other side, but we were delighted with the run.
"He is a versatile horse in regards to trip and, although the Bunbury Cup is over seven furlongs, I wouldn't mind seeing him drop back a bit as he is a horse who needs to come off a fast pace. He likes top of the ground, but the soft ground at Ascot was OK for him."
Jamesie could attempt to be the first Irish-trained Stewards' Cup winner since Red Alert in 1974. He is one of a massive 130 entries which include last year's winner Hoof It.
Top Offer and Mince are towards the head of the betting for Roger Charlton, with big-sprint regulars Waffle and Hawkeyethenoo engaged. James Fanshawe's pair of Mac's Power and Hallelujah along with William Haggas' Cape Classic are also among the favourites.
