Kauto Star’s magical fifth win in the William Hill King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day has cost Racing UK nearly £25,000 in subscriptions.

The TV channel (Sky 432 and Virgin 536) was offering any new or reinstating Sky subscribers three months (worth £60) off their annual subscription, should Kauto Star prevail.

The evergreen 11-year-old duly created history under Racing UK ambassador Ruby Walsh, and cost the company nearly £25,000 in free subscriptions after more than 400 people took up the offer - including Walsh himself.

Clive Cottrell, Marketing Director of Racing UK, said: “Ruby cost us nearly six figures with a similar money-back offer at the Cheltenham Festival in March, and let’s not forget Frankie Dettori cost us nearly £1million in 2007, so we haven’t got great form on these offers!

"I know Ruby benefitted too as he got the subscription package as a Christmas present for his father-in-law!

“A lot of the subscribers are new to the channel, and we’re very hopeful that once they’ve experienced Racing UK, they will all renew when their subscriptions are up. It was a great occasion on Boxing Day, and we were quite happy to come unstuck yet again!”

Racing UK broadcasts horseracing from 30 of the leading British racecourses and is shown on Sky 432 (UK, NI, ROI), Virgin Media 536 (UK) or UPC 411 (ROI).  The channel currently numbers nearly 50,000 subscriptions and will be broadcasting from an extra three tracks from May 1, following Exeter, Perth and Kelso’s decision to join the service.
