Johnston the main man at Goodwood

Tuesday 31 July 2012

Bet365 Stakes replay and result:

Landaman (D E Egan) 12-1
Las Verglas Star (P Hanagan) 7-1
Start Right (S De Sousa) 12-1

Mark Johnston got his Glorious Goodwood off to the perfect start as Landaman ran out a ready winner of the bet365.com Stakes.

The Middleham maestro traditionally excels with his runners on the Sussex Downs and this four-year-old was allowed to go off at 12-1, despite having registered back-to-back victories at Beverley.

His race was almost over before it began as he stumbled coming out of the stalls and apprentice Darren Egan did well to stay on board, but he was soon back on an even keel and took up the running at the top of the home straight before scoring by two and a half lengths from Las Verglas Star.

Egan, recording his first Goodwood winner, said: "He jumped a bit awkwardly, stumbled and I nearly came out of the side door. I just let him take me there, I gave him a kick in the belly coming down the hill and he ran on really well. I thought I'd gone a bit early, but he stayed on."

The jockey, who won for the stable on Scatter Dice at Ascot on Saturday, added: "I've had two rides for Mr Johnston and two winners, so it's going well."

Johnston added: "Joe Fanning was of the belief that he's best going from the front, but he stumbled out of the stalls and the boy gave him a very cool ride. It's a relief to get off the mark at Goodwood and he could run again later in the week."
