Dickin home after gallops accident

N0223911327942757714A

Robin Dickin has returned home from hospital to begin his recovery from a horrific gallops accident last week.

The trainer was left unconscious after a horse reared over and landed on top of him, and was airlifted to Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry where it was discovered he had suffered a fractured neck and shoulder blade. Dickin now faces six weeks in a neck brace and admits he feels lucky his injuries were not more severe.

He said: "I got home from hospital (on Monday) and I have to stay in a neck brace and take it very easy for six weeks. After the six weeks I have to go back to hospital to get rescanned and have another X-ray and we'll take it from there."

He added: "I consider myself very lucky to have suffered a spinal injury yet not suffered any damage to my spinal chord. It could have been so much worse. I don't remember anything about it as I was out for the count."

Dickin was in his hospital bed while stable star Restless Harry ran a creditable fourth behind Big Buck's in the Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham on Saturday.

He said: "My son came to the hospital to watch the race with me and I thought the horse ran a good race. He was beaten further by Big Buck's than he was the time before at Ascot, but he jumped well and didn't disgrace himself.

"I've had a brief chat with the owners, but I'm not sure what we're going to do next.

"There is no point ruining his novice status by going back over fences this season. He could go back into a handicap hurdle, but with his mark, it is obviously going to be difficult."
