Dandino in frame for Melbourne Cup
Sunday 12 August 2012
A crack at the Melbourne Cup is being considered for Dandino after he bounced back to form at Glorious Goodwood last week.
Having joined James Fanshawe for the new campaign, the five-year-old made an excellent start to the year with three good runs in defeat.
He was a big disappointment when a leading fancy for the Princess Of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket's July meeting, but showed that running to be all wrong when a close second in what looked a hot renewal of the Glorious Stakes on the Sussex Downs.
Matthew Budden, racing manager for owners Elite Racing, said: "We were really pleased with his performance. It was a decent effort and it was nice to see him bounce back after Newmarket, where he obviously didn't handle the ground.
"All the similar races are open to him, although James did also put him in the Caulfield Cup at the nomination stage.
"When Johnny Murtagh got off him the other day he said he would be an ideal horse for the Melbourne Cup, so that option is open to us if we want to take it.
"The race is a while away yet, but we have to give it some thought as we would probably have to give him a break. We'd want to make sure he was going down to Australia in top form."
