Cartmel call off Monday card
Sunday 26 August 2012
Officials at Cartmel have been forced to abandon their Bank Holiday Monday fixture due to waterlogging.
Although racing took place at the Cumbrian circuit on both Thursday and Saturday, the track was hit by rain on Saturday evening and there is a lot more on the way.
In light of the challenging forecast, clerk of the course Anthea Morshead has made the difficult decision to call off what is traditionally a popular fixture.
She said: "It's a big Bank Holiday meeting for Cartmel and we've had to abandon with a heavy heart.
"We've had two feet of rain since early June and already five inches in August.
"We'd be struggling to race today and the forecast suggests we could get anything between 20 and 30 millimetres of rain.
"It's disappointing, but the safety of horses and jockeys is paramount."
