Camborne another for Buick

Saturday 23 June 2012

Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap result:

Camborne (W Buick) 11-2 Fav
Hammerfest (G Mosse) 8-1
Harrison's Cave (J P O'Brien) 12-1

Camborne produced an outstanding burst of speed to win the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot.

Trained by John Gosden and ridden by William Buick, who teamed up for a Royal treble on Friday, the four-year-old came from last to first within a heartbeat. Buick switched his partner wide inside the final furlong and a half and he simply flew.

Two and a half lengths separated Camborne (11-2 favourite) and Hammerfest at the line, with Harrison's Cave and Alkimos third and fourth respectively.

Buick has now ridden five winners at Royal Ascot this year, three of them in the green silks of owner Princess Haya of Jordan.

Gosden said: "They (Sheikh Mohammed and Princess Haya) are great owners and breeders and I was delighted with William, who had lost the armband (for leading rider) to Ryan (Moore, before the race). He rode a beautiful race - it was chilly to come from last, but he got the job done."

Buick added: John said when I came into the paddock that I was on a favourite and I should ride him like one - with bags of confidence."
