Buick gets ride on Aussie raider

Sunday 8 July 2012

Paul Messara

William Buick is set for the ride on Australian challenger Ortensia in the Darley July Cup.

Paul Messara's mare, was only ninth in the King's Stand Stakes after winning the Al Quoz Sprint on World Cup night in Dubai, but her handler felt Ortensia's effort at Royal Ascot could be put down to getting upset before the race.

He said: "Prior to the King's Stand she didn't seem to handle the environment. She got upset in the pre-parade ring and broke out into quite a big sweat. By the time of the race she was very revved up and agitated and had run her race before she had even got there."

He added: "She ran an average race and pulled up with a sore back but everything's settled down now. We've had a couple of practices here which have been great and she's done well. She's done a good bit of work here and we're hoping she will be a much (better) settled horse on the day.

"Her last piece of work was excellent on the course proper here and she will have another gallop tomorrow. We are very pleased with her going into the race."

Former Australian-trained colt Sepoy will represent Mahmood Al Zarooni and Godolphin.

Four-times a Group One winner in Sheikh Mohammed's colours Down Under when in the care of Peter Snowden, the son of Elusive Quality finished well beaten in the Golden Shaheen on his first run for Al Zarooni.

"He's a good horse and he's back now," Al Zarooni told www.racinguk.com.

"When he arrived here (in Newmarket) he was a bit down. We gave him an easy time to recover. He has recovered and is in good form. He did a piece of work on Saturday and he's showing that sort of form (as he did in Australia).

"I don't know why he ran like he did at Meydan. The surface, or sometimes when they travel they get really down. It is long way to Dubai from Australia. That's why I think he ran like he did."
