Perfect Rehearsal for O’Farrell
Saturday 1 December 2012
Conor O'Farrell made the most a late call-up with an all-the-way win on top-weight Junior in the At The Races Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle.
He only got the ride after Tom Scudamore was re-routed to Newbury, mainly for the ride on The Package in the Hennessy Gold Cup, when Timmy Murphy was injured on Friday.
The young rider, based at David Pipe's stable, even travelled up from Devon on the horse box to the North East and was rewarded as Junior (3-1), a winner at both Cheltenham and Royal Ascot, refused to be passed.
Benny Be Good did his best but Junior plugged on to win by a length and three-quarters.
"I only found out last night I'd got the ride. I'm very grateful to Mr Pipe and the owners for putting me up," said O'Farrell.
"We left at 4.30 this morning, but at least I can have a sleep on the way back.
"It was Junior's first run of the season. He was quite fresh, so I just let him bowl along and he enjoyed himself.
"He was gaining ground at a lot of the fences and that is a very big asset for a horse in a race."
