July Cup hero Mayson retired
Sunday 14 October 2012
Richard Fahey's speed star Mayson, winner of the Darley July Cup, has been retired to stud.
The son of Invincible Spirit, in whom Cheveley Park Stud bought a controlling interest, powered home by five lengths at Newmarket at odds of 20-1, and came agonisingly close to further Group One glory when just touched off in the Prix de l'Abbaye on Arc weekend.
He had been a leading contender in the ante-post markets for the Qipco British Champions Sprint at Ascot, but suffered a bruised foot in Paris.
Fahey said: "We still haven't got a shoe on him and unfortunately there's not a lot left for him now.
"He's been a great horse for us. There won't be many horses that have won an Abernant, a Palace House and a July Cup all in the same year.
"We had a wonderful day with him at Newmarket and we'll have to try and find another one like him. That's the hard part.
"I think he has a good chance (of making a successful stallion). Six furlongs is probably his best trip, but he's shown good form over five as well.
"While he won his Group One in soft ground, he goes on anything. That gives him a good chance."
