Epsom Downs Racecourse

Standing on the Surrey Downs, Epsom is shaped like an elongated horseshoe. The track rises 150 feet in the first half mile then levelling out before a downhill stretch round Tattenham Corner. The straight five-furlong course is one of the fastest in the world.

In 1779, Lord Derby and Sir Charles Bunbury conceived the idea of a race to establish which horse was the best of its generation. With the Derby itself, the Oaks for fillies and the Coronation Cup for older horses, the two-day June meeting represents the ultimate test for the thoroughbred.
