Zaina and Frankie can set alight Newmarket
12 July 2012
Newmarket kicks of a fantastic few days of racing today. Indeed between now and Sunday we have the July Course plus cards from York, Epsom and Chester all to enjoy on Racing UK.
The ground is still holding back many horses and trainers from showing their full potential and I expect the bad weather will continue to throw up some strange results until the ground starts to dry out.
My competition selection today is going to be Zaina in the Goldsmiths Handicap at Newmarket. Gerard Butler's filly ran a shocker last time out but before that she stayed on nicely to win her maiden at Doncaster. There are a couple of horses you can easily write off in this contest and with Frankie Dettori in flying form and odds around 16/1 I will be having a small each-way punt.
My second selection ran well in the Coventry and Richard Hannon's Alhebayeb can go one better today in the July Stakes. This good-looking grey came from a fair way back at Ascot and the six furlongs looks ideal. I won't be at headquarters today or even in front of my television as I am making my first trip to Warwick. I will be in the area so it will be rude not to attend; fingers cross we miss the expected showers. Just for fun I will be having a Placepot made up from the following.
I chose these last night so if there are any withdrawals I will update selectiosn via Twitter.
2.15 Red Refraction, 2.50 Last Supper, 3.25 Perfect Pastime (nap), 3.55 Ghazeer (nb), 4.30 Byron Blue, 5.00 Mossbrae
Good luck today.
