Kauto is still the King!
The Anglo-Irish jumps classification came out yesterday and although he did not have a perfect season Kauto still came out at the top of the pile as the best chaser in the business. Long Run has never had the class of Kauto and I doubt either of them will be top next year as Kauto is now a 12-year-old and Long Run seems to be going backwards rather than forwards. I am sure some of you will disagree. I know Donald McCain, the National winning trainer, doesn't think Grumeti is the best hurdler and with the way his Cinders and Ashes did the business at The Festival I can see why.
Judging on his recent wweets he seemed a little grumpy yesterday when the ratings came out and I don't blame him. Grumeti ran well on the flat last time but I wouldn't be surprised to see him turned out at Ascot over further later on in the season. There were a few other surprises with the likes of Big Bucks, Sprinter Sacre and Hurricane Fly all making expected appearances, here are the full listings for 2011-12 season:
Champion 3m+ chaser Kauto Star 180
Champion 2m4f chaser Master Minded 174
Champion 2m4f+ hurdler Big Buck's 174
Champion 2m chaser Finian's Rainbow 173
Champion 2m hurdler Hurricane Fly/Rock On Ruby 170
Champion novice chaser Sprinter Sacre 169
Top 2m4f+ novice chaser Flemenstar 163
Champion novice hurdler Simonsig 160
Top 2m novice hurdler Grumeti 153
I was going to write my blog on the Derby today but the more I look at the race the more Camelot jumps out as head and shoulders above the field. I have not had a bet in the race but if Camelot continues to be backed and ends up being a 4/6 shot I will take him on come the big day. It doesn't look like a quality Derby at the moment but hopefully there is a superstar waiting in the wings. A small field and an odds-on favourite is not really what we want for the best race in the world. I would rather back Bonfire for a place than take odds on Camelot, any day of the week.
I am not inspired by today’s racing and nothing really jumps out at me, I may see how Red Somerset (Lingfield 5.00pm) fares in the claimer and I have two selections to lay below.
Good luck today.
