This time Maureen, this time!

28 July 2012

Richard Hughes takes over the ride on my mum's namesake, Maureen, today and she showed enough in her unlucky in-running defeat at Newmarket to suggest she can take the Group 3 Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot today.

Richard Hannon's two-year-old would surely have won with a decent run and I would guess that Mr Hughes will be a little closer to the pace today to ensure the same does not happen again.

I can't get away from Waffle in the big sprint at Ascot at 2.55, David Barron's charge won his race on the far side when finishing second to Dandy Boy in the Wokingham at Ascot last time out and slightly firmer ground should not do the six-year-old any harm today.

I am off to York today to witness the delights of Fallon, Dettori and the like at first hand. They both have decent rides but I think Mr Fallon will come out on top in the 2.05 and 4.20 races. I also like the look of Our Diane in the last for in-form trainer David O'Meara.

I was, like many other people, shocked to hear about the sad news that Hereford and Folkestone are to close, although I was less shocked when I found out the Chairman of Northern Racing is none other than Lord Howard, who has made a career of cutbacks and closures. I’m sure that there will be some sort of housing deal or land regeneration deal on offer for the land in the very near future.

Now everyone who knows me also knows I have a very competitive streak and I am a bad loser, well they are all wrong! I am in fact a terrible loser. And I used to be a lot worse as there is nothing worse than doing all your homework and then watching your selection get beat by a short head on the line. Fortunately these days I am a little less grumpy when the inevitable happens as I can lay off my selection on the Exchanges and secure a profit as I did yesterday, when Emirates Queen hit the rock bottom price of 1.01 in-running. So yes I made some money, but in truth I really needed a winner in the Competition and although the 'Green Book' ensures I picked up a 'chunk of change' I will have to follow the Cumani horse next time out to get my points back. That horse owes me, deep breaths, rant over, move on.
