Tanya’s Blog - Batonnier looked the type to return to Cheltenham in March and win

30 January 2012

On Saturday Batonnier looked just the type to return to Cheltenham in March and win!  The penny didn’t truly drop for Alan King’s juvenile until New Year’s Day, a full eight races into his career.  He’ll be on my shortlist for a few weeks time.

Any doubt or apprehensive regarding Hurricane Fly’s well being was well and truly dispelled, with every stride the Champion Hurdler asserted his authority at the head of the betting and retention of his crown looks a cert.  Even for one so fragile.

Midnight Chase was majestic, Dougie Costello, always a favourite of mine, showed why he should be given so many more opportunities.  I still haven’t given up with Quito De La Roque in the Gold Cup, but if he doesn’t make it to Cheltenham, Midnight Chase is a good a sub as any.

Andrew Lynch once again shone at Leopardstown over the weekend and is a visitor to Ayr this afternoon.   He rides RADHARC NA MARA in the 2.20 who has won in Britain before, she finished third in a big field handicap on penultimate start and was going well when falling last time out.

Fingers crossed that the temperatures aren’t going to plummet as much as reported, having escaped winter so far, it will seem so cruel to meetings this week, including  Sandown, Ffos Las and Wetherby on Saturday.
