I’ve lost to the wife 4-3 but I’ll be back…

21 August 2012

Today's tips:

4.15pm Brighton: Waspy

It was a close run thing last night in the McNae household as my wife and I went head-to-head during University Challenge. It is something of a ritual in our house to try to answer Paxman’s questions before the assorted university bods, and yes we do keep score. I have to admit that there have been a few nil-nil draws between us but last night was a high-scoring affair with my wife securing a 4-3 win courtesy of some pop music questions, which she always seems to get right. I am not worried though because she had everything in her favour this week in that she got all the alcohol and music questions that she is such an expert at and there was not one single sports question that put me at a big disadvantage. I have told her that her form is only temporary and I will be back with a vengeance next week. Come on Paxman, get some proper blokes questions on the show, who cares about modern music band members who have University degrees. Thanks a lot Brian May!

I am not sure if I am pleased that the football season is back in full swing or not. I used to love the game, but a combination of matches becoming less physical and full of posers means that I am not quite as up for it as I used to be. I still find myself drawn to Match Of The Day every week and being a Leeds supporter I must really like the game because given their form over the last few seasons most people would have given up on the whole thing by now. One thing I do know is that the start of the season has fallen a little flat given the magnificent Olympics that we have just witnessed. Nonetheless I will still be glued to Match Of The Day every Saturday or even a Sunday morning.

My selections of late have been disappointing, at least my lay of England in the third and final Test produced a positive result. It just about went down to the wire, though, thanks to some final session heroics from Matt Prior. A win is a win, however, and I am afraid South Africa were worthy winners. Roll on the one-day series that starts on Friday.

Today I am keen on the chances of Waspy in the 4.15 at Brighton. This horse did us a favour last time out at Bath and won with some ease. I fancy that it will be much of the same again today. Let’s hope so.

All the best folks

You did well to score Three…are you sure it wasn’t your young daughter who scored the Four? :}
