In Pursuit of the right trip
6 July 2012
I often shy away from backing horses coming down in trip, I find it much easier to spot a horse that will get a little further rather than one that has been tried over longer distances and then tried again over a furlong or two less. That said my competition selection today is hopefully going to buck that trend.
I am going with William Haggas's Pursue in the 7.30pm at Beverley. I backed him last time out when he was all over the winner a furlong out and then finished second, but I am prepared to give this Cheveley Park gelding one more chance. The uphill finish at Beverley should help and the assistance of Joe Fanning in the saddle certainly will.
I will be attending Haydock tonight and tweeting live from the course, with the aim of a Win and Lay selection in each race. If the intended rain comes I will be doing exactly the same from the comfort of my sofa; it's a hard life. Join in the fun and send your selections to try and beat mine to my Twitter account. The maiden race at 8.15 looks really tricky, and Godolphin have a couple of well-bred entries, but it may pay to look a little further down the bookmakers' boards and take a chance on Richard Hannon's Professor as a decent each-way shout at a nice price.
Good luck today.
