I may well be talking through my pocket, but…

10 July 2012

There were some very strange trading figures recorded on the 9pm race at Roscommon last night. It is a track well known for being a nightmare to bet on the photo finishes because of the poor angles and set up of the winning line. But last night I watched the usually reliable Pat Smullen riding Call Me Bubbles.  He got in all sorts of trouble in the final furlong before finally seeing daylight late on. I had laid the horse in-running at even money so was happy to see my bet matched and was convinced he had been beaten by a head or more. I was doubly sure he had not got up when I saw that he didn't even hit 1.33 in-running so there was no way he got up on the line, surely? Wrong, he won.

I still don't believe it now and I have been staring at the photo finish for a good hour. It made me think back to when I first started gambling and I would be stood in the bookies listening to a racecourse commentary with no pictures. You would have to rely on the patchy commentary that more often than not ended in disappointment as something that hadn't been mentioned for the whole race came from the clouds to pip my selection. My point is no matter how much racing you watch there is always something around the corner that will enthrall you even more in this great game of ours. I wonder if you guys have any photo finish nightmares? I have put up a thread on the forum so we can all have a moan. http://tippinggames.racinguk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=16311

Marco Botti's Law of the Range was a huge winner for me at Pontefract last year but his recent form, and the heavy ground, leads me to look elsewhere for the winner of the Pipalong Stakes on Racing UK today. I am going to take a chance on Dragonera, who has run some respectable races this year without being spectacular, but this race may well turn into a slog. With Silvestre de Sousa likely to try to make all on Law Of The Range, it may just set the race up for a finisher and Dragonera should be staying on at the end and will be rare E/W selection.

Good luck today.
