Are we scared of the Irish?
26 June 2012
After the multi-national Ascot card last week the Irish Derby is the next classic up for grabs this coming Saturday, but only the Irish are competing which seems to leave things wide open for Camelot to claim the prize, I can understand that some trainers may not want to travel just to finish down the field behind the Derby winner but it does dilute the quality of the race if only one countries horses are entered. It seems a little strange that Ballydoyle and the like think nothing of popping over the Irish Sea to plunder the English purses and yet we rarely send anything back the other way.
Another quiet day ahead I feel looking at the afternoon cards but I will keep an eye on Throwing Roses (2.30 Beverley) who has come up against a couple of decent horses in her first three runs and has a dose of seconditus to get rid off. Agent Allison who beat her last time almost won the Albany at Ascot last week and because she is up against the colts she receives a little bit of weight and will hopefully get her head in front today, finally. I have delved into the maiden that Sentaril won at Newbury in April more than once already and Revelette for Charles Hills is another horse that finish down the field but will enjoy the step up in trip today in the 4.30 at Beverley. Racing UK covers a nice card from Newbury starting at 6.20, the most interesting race looks like being the 8.20 Fillies Handicap when there are a couple of promising horses that go head to head after winning their races last time out. Horses from the Hannon and Cumani stable are likely to dominate the market but I really like the way Amanda Perrett's Selfsame showed a turn of foot and squeezed through a small gap to score last time out, she won with a little in hand and can go in again today.
Good luck today.
